NEXUS May Unlock Unique Perks, But Only for Certain Travelers

Global Entry is the gold standard for breezing through U.S. immigration, but it doesn't do much for Canada. NEXUS is designed specifically for expedited entry into Canada by land and air—and grants Global Entry automatically. If you regularly travel to or through Canada, NEXUS can save time at Canadian checkpoints and sometimes even in U.S. airports with NEXUS kiosks. But the application process is longer and more complex, so it's only worth it if your travel profile fits.

How to Layer NEXUS on Top of Global Entry

If you decide it's worth it, here's how to add NEXUS after already holding Global Entry:

01

Apply for NEXUS via TTP

Log in to your Trusted Traveler Program account.

Choose NEXUS, complete the application, and pay the $50 fee.

02

Schedule Your Joint Interview

NEXUS requires joint U.S. and Canadian in-person vetting.

Interviews are only available at select northern border locations and some Canadian airports.

03

Update Travel Profiles If Approved

After approval, your NEXUS ID covers Global Entry and TSA PreCheck.

Update your Known Traveler Number (KTN) to the new NEXUS ID in airline profiles for full benefits.

What NEXUS Adds (and What It Doesn’t)

Here’s what NEXUS gets you that Global Entry can’t:

Exclusive

Canadian Border Fast-Track

Dedicated queues for reentering Canada by land, air, or marine.

Overlapping

Extra U.S. Lane Flexibility

NEXUS members can use Global Entry kiosks and TSA PreCheck in the U.S.

Cost

Lower Fee

$50 for five years; less than Global Entry.

Limitation

Stricter Requirements

Joint U.S./Canada approval and interview — not always convenient.

Real-World Use Cases

Business Route

Situation: You fly to Toronto monthly from the U.S. for work

Move: NEXUS can save you 30–60 minutes every trip at both U.S. and Canadian passport controls.

Family Road Trip

Situation: You drive from Detroit to Windsor twice a year

Move: NEXUS lanes keep everyone in the car moving—no more backed-up bridges!

Infrequent Canada Visits

Situation: You only travel outside the U.S. to Europe or Mexico

Move: You won’t see meaningful gains from adding NEXUS to your Global Entry.

Before and After NEXUS—Does It Matter?

Only Global Entry

Expedited reentry to the U.S., but stuck in standard lines and waiting at Canadian border crossings.

NEXUS Added

Dedicated lanes for both directions; U.S. and Canadian border hassles drastically reduced if you travel often.
