NEXUS Renewal Isn't the Same as Your First Application

NEXUS renewals are more digital but less predictable. Some members get instant approvals, others don’t. Since 2022, interviews happen at select locations only—often straddling the border, requiring both U.S. and Canadian officers to be present. Grace periods help, but don't risk losing benefits by waiting too long.

How to Renew Your NEXUS Membership

Follow these core steps to keep your cross-border privileges active—whether you need an interview or not.

01

Log into your TTP account

Access your Trusted Traveler Programs (TTP) dashboard.

Use login.gov, verify all contact info, and check your expiration date before starting the renewal process.

02

Complete and submit the renewal application

Update any personal data and answer new eligibility questions.

Look for any new questions about travel patterns, criminal history, or updated passport details. Pay the $50 fee.

03

Watch for notification: interview needed?

Not all renewals require an interview anymore.

You’ll get a prompt. If selected: book online. Slots in Canada/U.S. are limited—consider checking repeatedly for cancellations.

04

Keep using your expired card (if eligible)

Don’t worry if you’re still waiting.

If you applied before your previous expiry, you're usually in a grace period and can keep using NEXUS lanes, kiosks, and benefits.

05

Receive your approval and new card

You’ll get a card mailed to the address on file.

Activate your new card from your TTP account dashboard and destroy the old one responsibly.

NEXUS Renewal: 2019 vs 2024

2019 Renewal2024 RenewalKey Difference
Interview Required?Almost always, at airport or enrollment centerRequired for some, at limited border-crossing centers only (US/Canada both present most times). Virtual not allowed. Sometimes waived for low-risk profiles or during backlog surges (policy may change anytime). Intricate crossing logistics, especially for families.
Processing Time2–8 weeks typical1–12+ months possible, often no updates during delay periods. Longest waits for those flagged for interviews or further review post-pandemic. Many 2023–24 renewals saw 100+ day delays even for straightforward cases.
Status During WaitExpired = lose accessOn-time renewal = 5 year grace extension. Expired/no renewal = no NEXUS privileges. Always carry proof of application if status in question at the border.
Account ManagementCBP Login, basic email noticesTTP/login.gov, frequent system changes, tighter document requirements and 2FA/SMS codes. Some users must reactivate or reset their accounts and re-upload documents.
Cost$50 USD (same)$50 USD (unchanged), but payment glitches more common with TTP's upgraded site. Retain your payment receipt and screenshot for backup.

FAQ

NEXUS Renewal FAQ

If I renew before expiry, can I keep using NEXUS?

Yes, you enter a grace period—proof of application is required if asked at the border.

Does everyone need a new interview?

No, many applicants are automatically extended, but anyone with major changes or returning after a break may be called in.

Where can I interview for NEXUS now?

Limited sites, mostly at select US/Canada land border crossings, not all airports.

Do I get notified if I don’t need an interview?
