Border Shortcuts for Students

NEXUS makes frequent cross-border school commutes much faster.

For families living near the US-Canada border, the drive to school can mean unpredictable delays. NEXUS lets eligible students breeze through dedicated border lanes, often cutting an hour or more off their daily commutes. It’s free for applicants under 18, but requires paperwork and an in-person interview with a parent or legal guardian present. Whether for elementary, high school, or college, NEXUS is the north-south shortcut families can actually count on.

How Students Can Apply for NEXUS

Follow these steps to get students signed up for NEXUS and ready to speed through the border:

01

Check Eligibility

Confirm the student meets citizenship and residence requirements.

Generally, US and Canadian citizens or permanent residents with a clean record are eligible. There’s no minimum age, but under-18s require adult consent.

02

Gather Documents

Collect proof of citizenship and guardian relationship.

Typical documents: birth certificate, passport, school ID, and legal guardianship paperwork if applicable.

03

Apply Online at TTP

Create a Trusted Traveler Programs (TTP) account and submit the application.

Set up a parent or guardian account to add the student as a dependent. Applications for minors have a $0 fee.

04

Conditional Approval & Interview Scheduling

Wait for background check, then book an interview at a NEXUS center.

Both child and parent/guardian must attend in person. Choose the location closest to your border crossing point.

05

Attend the Interview

Bring all original documents and both applicant and guardian.

An officer may ask about school routines and purpose for NEXUS. Fingerprinting usually isn’t required for children.
